Northeast South Dakota

The wind, rain and cold weather has kept a lot of fishermen off the water lately and fishing has been slow. Fishermen are catching small walleyes and some decent perch along the south shore of Lake Poinsett. Anglers are using a jig/minnow combination or a minnow and a plain hook under a slip bobber.

Probably the hottest lake we have going right now in the northeast is the Big Stone perch bite. Most of the perch are 9 to 10 inches after you sort through them. Most anglers are using a small jig and spikes but the larger perch are coming off minnows. A few can push 11 inches.

Big Stone is also producing some walleyes at sunset and sunrise casting crankbaits or a jig and plastic from shore.

Big Stone Lake

There is a good perch bite going on right now. The early morning bite is the best time to hit the water. Anglers are using spikes, wax worms and red worms. The anglers using fathead minnows are getting the better quality perch just not as many of them.

The hot spot isn’t a secret! Try the Rocky Ledge area and Hartford Beach State Park and north.

We are experiencing the dog days of summer in a few northeastern lakes. Fishing isn’t fast and furious but fish can be caught. You may have to switch species.

Big Stone Lake

There is a decent walleye bite going on in shallow water just outside the weedline. In some instances a bottom bouncer and spinner/crawler combination is the best choice. If the traditional spinner isn’t working try the new Northland Butterfly Blade spinner with a slow death hook.

We also pulled shallow running crankbaits and caught walleyes in the 15 to 19 inch range along with some nice perch.

The perch bite is good but it’s not a guarantee. You need to move around until you contact them. Tungsten jigs tipped with spikes vertically jigged are out producing traditional small lead head jigs.

Waubay Lake

Good walleye bite here when you get on top of them. There are quite a few anglers out pulling the basin but those fishing rock points with crawlers are doing well.

We are experiencing the dog days of summer in a few northeastern lakes. Fishing isn’t fast and furious but fish can be caught. You may have to switch species.

Big Stone Lake

There is a fair perch bite going on but you have to move around and find them. Anglers are using spikes or wax worms and vertically jigging while other anglers are pulling crank baits for them. Over the weekend the surface temp was in the lower 80’s which can make it a little tougher.

The walleye bite is certainly slower compared to a couple weeks ago. We landed a half dozen walleyes Saturday morning between 15 to 19 inches but when the air temperature hit 90 degrees by noon the bite quite. Sunday was really slow.

Lake Poinsett

Still a lot of small walleyes are being taken. A spinner and crawler or spinner and minnow combo is working. Pulling crank baits are also producing fish. When the wind is blowing get shallow on top of the bars and on the downwind side of the lake.

Lake Albert

Albert has really slowed down to what it has been. There hasn’t been a lot of pressure on Albert and the algae bloom exploded.

Bitter Lake

A few walleyes being caught along the weed line using spinner/crawler combo or a jig and minnow. Also try a spinner/crawler combo along the rock points.

Indian Springs

The Dog Days of summer is upon us on virtually every body of water and Indian Spring is no exception. One day the fishing is pretty good and then it dies the next. Casting crank baits or a jig and minnow or leech along the weed line is working. The weed line is very distinct so a slip bobber with a leech, minnow or crawler is a good choice.

There is a very good population of big fish here but, there is also another age group of 5 to 6 inch walleyes coming up.

We are experiencing the dog days of summer in a few northeastern lakes. Fishing isn’t fast and furious but fish can be caught. You may have to switch species.

Big Stone Lake

The perch bite is going but not every day. Tungsten jigs tipped with spikes works the best. They are light biters! There is also a decent bluegill bite going on over and along side the rocks.

A few limits of walleyes are being taken up north pulling plugs. In doing so they’re also catching a few perch.

Lake Poinsett

Still catching quite a few walleyes in that 13” to 16” range. The SD GFP wants the smaller walleyes thin down due to over population. Spinners and crawlers or a spinner and minnow are working well.

Perch anglers are getting some very nice perch. You just need to move around and find them.

Lake Albert

Albert has really slowed down to what it has been.

Bitter Lake

A few walleyes being caught along the weed line using spinner/crawler combo or a jig and minnow.

For A Better Tasting Filet

The other day I had a gentleman looking at my Facebook page or the web site (fishermensnetsd.com) and sent me a message asking why I bleed the walleyes that we're going to keep. The reason is once you bleed a walleye it makes for a perfectly white filet. All the blood is gone and when you're at the cleaning table there isn't any blood to deal with which cuts down on any bacteria that could infect the meat.

But more importantly a bleed fish tastes better than an unbleed one. ...I bleed all my walleyes, perch and any northerns that we're going to keep.

Hint: Bleed your fish in the livewell just before you go in and load up. Then pack them on ice for the trip back home or to the cleaning facility and you'll be surprised how much easier it is to filet a cold fish.

Keep a tight line!!

Big Stone Lake

The perch bite is starting to take off. Tungsten jigs tipped with spikes and vertically jigged over the side of the boat works the best. They are light biters so leave you slip floats at home. There are a lot of smaller perch coming up in the system (which is good to see) so bring enough bait with you.

Some walleyes are being taken in the north half of the lake. Pulling jointed Rapala’s, #4 Salmo Hornets, #4.5 Rattling Hornets and #5 Berkley Flicker Shads work the best for us. When pulling plugs for walleyes you’ll also pick up some nice perch. Spinners with a slow death hook and half a crawler is also producing walleyes.

Big Stone is becoming a premiere largemouth bass lake in our region. Right now, the best bite is early morning or late evenings. Cast top water baits around the islands. The bass are big so please practice catch and release. Take a picture and let them go. In doing so well be able to keep this fishery vibrant.

Lake Albert

Still a good walleye bite going on right now but it has slowed a little to what it was. Pulling plugs and covering water is still a great presentation. Number 4 Salmo Hornets and #4.5 Rattling Hornets are working along with #5 Berkley Flicker Shads.

The walleyes are also starting to lean towards a crawler and spinner combination. Try a helicopter spinner with a slow death hook or the new Butterfly Blade Super Death Rig from Northland Tackle and half a crawler.

Lake Poinsett

Poinsett may be one of the hotter lakes in NE South Dakota right now. The fish are running in the 14” to 17” range. You’ll also catch a lot of smaller ones and an occasional larger one. Fish a spinner and crawler just outside the weed line.

Don’t be afraid to keep the smaller walleyes. This lake is loaded with walleyes (13 to 14 inches) and the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks took the 15” minimum length limit off as we need to get some if these fish out of the system.

Big Stone Lake

We have a weed problem on Big Stone but the upper two thirds of the lake are fishable. The curly leaf pond weed (an evasive species) dies off in July so more of the lake will be accessible. Walleyes and perch are hitting plugs and a spinner/crawler combo. Surface temps are in the 78 degree range.

Lake Albert

Pretty decent walleye bite going on right now. Pulling plugs and covering water seems to be the best presentation. Number 4 Salmo Hornets and #4.5 Rattling Hornets along with #5 Flicker Shads are working the best for us. Each day varies as how the bite goes. One day it’s hot and the next day you have to work pretty hard for them.

Lake Poinsett

There is a very good bite going on right now. This lake is loaded with smaller walleyes (13 to 14 inches) and the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks took the 15” minimum length limit off as we need to get some if these fish out of the system.

Try the new Butterfly Blade Super Death Rig from Northland Tackle and half a crawler out in 12 to 15 ft of water and hold on!

I’ve seen some very nice crappies on Poinsett too. Once you find them a jig and plastic works great.

Waubay Lake

The white bass bite on Waubay is HOT! Pull cranks out in the basin and hold on. 80 white bass in a day is possible. The walleyes are with the white bass also.

Lake Albert

Good walleye bite going on right now. Pulling plugs and covering water seems to be the best presentation. Number 4 Salmo Hornets and #4.5 Rattling Hornets are working the best for us. We’ve had some thunderstorms the last couple of days and they shut down during the storm but once the sun came out they took off.

Lake Poinsett

Want a 75 fish day then you have to try Lake Poinsett.

Waubay Lake

There is a good walleye bite going right now. The walleyes are out deep over the mud feeding on mud worms and mayflies. Pulling 4 colors of lead core using Berkley Flicker Shads, Flicker Minnows and Wally Divers is producing nice fish. The silver bass are also out in the basin and are suicidal right now and create a lot of action. Keep the loin portion of the filet above the lateral line, trim off the red meat on the skin side, soak in 7 UP prior to frying for a great fish fry.

Blue Dog

Decent walleye bite here pulling crankbaits. Be prepared to catch quite a few smaller fish before you get a decent one but they are there. Anglers are also catching a few decent size notherns and an occasional jumbo perch.

Lake Albert

Nice walleye bite going on here. Anglers are getting them on crankbaits either casting or trolling and pulling a spinner and minnow or a spinner and crawler.
